Reach for the (Corgi) Stars

When it comes to dogs and nature, I love to photograph those WOW moments between your pooch and seasonal splendour. Having a megapixel Nikon Z7, these images still surprise me on the regular: sharp, vivid, with spectacular color. Now I want more: action photography.

Setting a new goal is scary for a perfectionist. What if I can’t get speedy stop-action dog photos after investing in a camera with more frames per second? Will the investment pay off? The doubts have been haunting and the first attempts kind of, well, meh.

So I accepted the role of Official Team Photographer for the Southern Alberta Corgi Racers @southernalbertacorgiracers. These are the racing corgis that are supported enthusiastically by Spruce Meadows. Soon I discovered that these little loaves can run. Fast. Challenge accepted! It’s been a fun journey that pushes me through the doubts.

I’m reminded, more than ever, that growth doesn’t come from perfection. It comes from the mess, the misses, and the moments when we dare to try.

So here’s my gentle, paws-itive nudge to you:

Pick a goal that scares you a little.

Whether it’s:

  • Taking your dog on their first summit hike

  • Trying paddleboarding with your pup

  • Starting that creative dog-centric side hustle

  • Picking up that camera and taking dog photos. Any dog photos. Then doing it again and again.

You are much more capable and adaptable than you think, and you’re wavering attempts will get you where you want to be.

And if you need a cheerleader (or an action photographer), I’ve got your back. Now go chase that dream!
