Seasons and Locations for Outdoor Dog Photography

Every dog has a season that suits their personality. Some dogs shine running through snow, while others love warm evenings and river swims. During your consultation we’ll choose the perfect season and location to create images that reflect your dog’s true spirit.

Dog Photography Parks and Spaces

Southern Alberta has incredible beauty. Here are just a few of the locations that outdoor adventurers and their dogs love the most for photography.

Local Parks

Blending familiarity with nature, city, provincial and federal parks offer the environments that you visit frequently with your dog. The advantage is home territory: sights, smells, pathways and features that your dog knows. This is a wonderful option for dogs that respond best in environments that they visit regularly. With unexpected elements more controlled, your senior or nervous dog may relax and enjoy the session ride to the fullest.

Calgary and area parks offer a wide variety of features from wild to groomed:

  • Baker Park

  • Bowness Park

  • Nose Hill Park

  • Royal Oak Park

  • Paskapoo Trails

  • Cochrane Ranch

  • Glenbow Ranch

  • Quarry Lake Offleash Park (Canmore)

Water dog photography

Some dogs absolutely live for summer and being in the Bow or other rivers. Splashy fun is a favorite sport for dogs like Labrador and golden retrievers, German shepherds and spaniels.

Almost any riverside park works as long as access is easy and it is shallow enough for your dog to retrieve, play and enjoy. Here are a few favourite locations:

  • Bowness Park

  • Bowmont Park

  • Jim Uffelmann Memorial Park (Cochrane)

  • Quarry Lake Offleash Park (Canmore)

Campgrounds

Alberta has phenomenal campgrounds with trails and scenic spots that are perfect without having to hike for miles.

  • Peter Lougheed Provincial Park

  • Kananaskis Provincial Park

  • Little Bow Provincial Park

  • Bragg Creek Provincial Park

  • Sheep River Provincial Park

Mountains

  • Quarry Lake Offleash and Trails (Canmore)

  • Kananaskis Provincial Park - intermittent stops and hikes

  • Grassi Lakes

  • Banff National Park

Your Home Environment

For puppies, smaller dog breeds and more pampered pups, your yard can be the safest outdoor location for your photo session. Not only is it already in your heart, but your dog calls this home. Your art becomes even more emotionally elevated when you have wonderful photos that incorporate carefully chosen features and well-loved landscapes.

“Joy@puptentphotography is a gem! She understood Mango perfectly and went above and beyond. She even got into the freezing water to capture Mango's best moments - talk about dedication! Thanks to Joy, we have some truly incredible photos. Highly recommend!"
