Handling the Heat
OK so we’re all happy that the rain has finally stopped. Now about those high 20s - 30s temperatures……
Dogs are way more susceptible to heat than we realize. As humans we’re concerned about sunscreen and sun-blocking clothes, while we need to be considering dogs and their fur. Dogs don’t sweat (except through paw pads) so they pant to lower their core temperature through moisture evaporation. So how do we help them the best?
My pomskies cannot handle anything past 24 degrees C. I have cooling jackets which I swear by, one by Ruffwear and the other, Kurgo. Here are my best tips for keeping your dog cool:
cooling vests: remember to “recharge” them with water frequently
hike or walk early in the morning or later in the evening with cooler temperatures
hydrate hydrate hydrate. Offer your dog water constantly
avoid city pavement and sidewalks. We have shoes. They don’t.
fans. We have several in our home for my dogs’ favorite rooms, because we don’t have AC.
monitor your dog for signs of heat stroke. It can happen very very quickly. Signs include drooling, lethargy and vomiting/diarrhea.
Remember that your dogs may not show heat stroke symptoms right away - you may return home and discover that you’ve slipped up. Be vigilant and think of a river or lake visit next time instead of a highly active walk or fun.
