5 essentials needed FOR AN OUTDOOR DOG PHOTOSHOOT

Let’s face it. You need a whole bunch of things for a photo session. This list is the lesser-known essentials that I won’t be without on a photoshoot.

Item #1: Long Line Leash

MIGHTY PAW CABLE TIE-OUT

Use a long line leash: 10 feet is ideal. You can secure your dog anywhere, and usually you can hide the plastic-coated cable or fabric. Have a high-energy dog? Just by adding a leash, you send the message to your dog that they have to stay in place for a few minutes. Reduce the stress of your dog escaping and enjoy the shoot instead.

Item #2: squeaker

PRIMOS STILL MOUSE SQUEAKER

What dog owner doesn’t have a squeaker from inside of a destroyed toy? Or buy a PRIMOS mouse or rabbit squeaker. Wear it on a lanyard for your next session and don’t forget to use it. You’ll get the dog’s attention and pretty much ensure a cute head tilt.

Item #3: camera harness

SKOUT G2 SLING STYLE HARNESS

If you have a DSLR or a mirrorless camera, invest in a harness. At all costs, prevent a dropped camera, especially near water. A full chest strap or my favorite, a shoulder sling from @cotton_carrier works beautifully.

Always carry eye wipes. You’ll want to focus on the eyes, and dog eyes are notorious for having “stuff” in and around them. Gentle and strong, eye wipes can also be used to remove “slobber” too.

Item #5: Your Sense of Humour

28 tips to help you relax instantly

Keep relaxed with a sense of humour during the photo session, even if you hit a few challenging moments. If you’re relaxed, your clients and their dog(s) will also be relaxed. No amount of “gear” is going to replace the awesome photos you’ll get when everyone is enjoying time together.
