why photographers don’t sell their raw images
A raw image is just the beginning
You’ve had your photo session, and your pet photographer has taken literally hundreds of images. Where are they? Where do they go?
RAW IMAGES are just the beginning
RAW images are the backbone to a photographer’s work. In your dog’s photo session, the RAW image is what our camera sensor picks up and records. These files are the moments; the visions we already have of your dog’s complete images. Adjusting lighting, movement and light sensitivity on our cameras, we capture the RAW photos knowing what we need to do to model them.
RAW photos are not the final product, but just the beginning. They are the sparks that evolve into art. Reviewing all of the RAW photos, we select only the best of the best from your photo session.
RAW images interpreted
The professional photographer knows what images will work, and what will not. By carefully sorting through all of the RAW images, we select only what we know will ultimately be the most outstanding photos for your gallery. We use our knowledge of what our editing programs are capable of and how we plan to skillfully use them.
Clients trust professional pet photographers to select what will be the most unique, personalized photos that will be theirs.
raw photos: size and storage
During your session 600-700 images are captured and stored on the photographer’s system. Each file containing details that can’t be seen until processed.
We generally keep all of our session RAW files for backup and potential future use.
Specialized applications read these files giving the photographer the first glimpse of of what the image can be.
why do they get post-processed?
Professional photographers create their signature art style by editing out unwanted items, enhancing elements, and creating pleasant compositions. They have developed their skills to use photography programs that are only the best, most technologically advanced software available. This takes years to master and to creatively understand what’s possible to infuse emotion and art into your dog’s photo.
RAW PHOTOS GET TRANSFORMED
For social media, website portfolios, or commercial use: all RAW images have to be converted to a format that each system can use. Your dog’s images are converted into JPEG format for social media or personal use.
For large format printing or commercial use, TIFF files are used. Cost for these files is substantially larger than a client image sold for their personal use.
quality over quantity
Distinctive, branded art created by any pet photographer is proudly available to our clients as a finished product. What makes each photographer unique is the education, experience and artistic vision that we infuse into each and every enhanced photo.
Because we want to present consistent, gorgeous images, professional photographers only sell edited images. Whatever we put out in the world is what clients base their decision on when choosing a photographer. Our clients are confident they’ll be getting quality images that reflect the photographer’s knowledge and style, which is based on a portfolio of post processed, finished images of art.
RAW AND POST-PROCESSED IMAGE ART
Canadian copyright law protects every professional photo (RAW, JPEG, or TIFF files) from anyone using these for financial gain. Clients purchase copies that are optimized for social media or for their own use. The right to use any format of the image for financial purposes remains with the photographer unless a detailed contract is signed and approved by both parties.
